Sustainable Fisheries Partnership
Written by Regine Wilber on . Posted in Data Analytics & Visualisation.
Sustainable Fisheries Partnership sought Calligo’s help to visualise data solutions to prevent bycatch of ocean wildlife in commercial fishing at Seafood Expo.
It was a month before Seafood Expo North America, the leading trade event for seafood buyers in every market category.
Sustainable Fisheries Partnership had new research with data and solutions of how to prevent and reduce the catch of ocean wildlife – sharks, seabirds, marine mammals, and sea turtles – in commercial fishing. “Bycatch,” the catch of non-target species, is the biggest single threat to the sustainability of marine fisheries.
The trade show provided a pivotal opportunity to tangibly show the best solutions for addressing bycatch problems to hundreds of retailers, seafood companies, and fisheries stakeholders. For example, if longline fisheries were having trouble with seabirds grabbing bait and getting hooked, what could they do? Sustainable Fisheries Partnership had the answers to these problems in their data. But the solutions were buried in reports and not easy to see for users.
Sustainable Fisheries Partnership looked to Calligo to visualize the answers hidden in the data and help them make a splash at the trade show.
Calligo helped Sustainable Fisheries Partnership refine their data, using Alteryx to clean and visualise the data into Tableau for users.
Calligo worked with Sustainable Fisheries Partnership to investigate their data sources.
The data was in a single-source database and was mostly clean. However, there was a large quantity, and Sustainable Fisheries Partnership needed Calligo’s help to refine and tease out what aspects of the data end users would be most interested in.
Calligo used Alteryx to extract and clean up the data, and then loaded it into Tableau to produce data visualizations for Sustainable Fisheries Partnership’s users.
The Solve My Bycatch Problem tool allows end users to see various factors, such as effectiveness, implementation, and cost, and evaluate the pros and cons of different strategies and methods to find the best solutions for their specific wildlife interaction problem(s).
All the visualizations were completed quickly and delivered on time.
Our Solve My Bycatch Problem tool is a resource for fisheries stakeholders to understand how to reduce risk to vulnerable ocean wildlife. But it’s only really valuable if people use it. The eye-catching design and easy user interface that Calligo created will help ensure that the right people get the information they need.
Kathryn Novak, Sustainable Fisheries Partnership
The Solve My Bycatch Problem tool was presented at Seafood Expo and received positive feedback. Sustainable Fisheries Partnership plans to make it accessible on mobile.
The Solve My Bycatch Problem tool was unveiled at a Bycatch Solutions event at the Seafood Expo, and was highlighted as one of the new initiatives in seafood sustainability in a story by Progressive Grocer.
The tool was presented on screens at the event at Sustainable Fisheries Partnership’s booth on the trade show floor, allowing for hands-on experience. The data visualizations and tool were well received, and Sustainable Fisheries Partnership’s end users loved the display.
Sustainable Fisheries Partnership stood out from the crowd, with a data-based tool that users could interact with and access to solve their crucial issues – and showed people the power of their dataset.
Next up, the project will center around making the data and tooling accessible on mobile, to support the 25 to 30 percent of users who access the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership website via mobile devices.
SunRun

SunRun sought Calligo’s help to become more data-driven and integrate new BI tools (Tableau and Snowflake) to back their diversification strategy.
Home solar panel company SunRun had struggled for some time with data governance and effective analytics. This was compounded when they acquired a similar company and inherited other business intelligence (BI) platforms.
The company wanted to become more tech-focused and data-driven in order to back their strategy of diversifying into virtual power grids and energy trading. As well as bringing advanced technical talent into their business, they decided to move from their current Google-based platforms to new BI tools Tableau and Snowflake.
SunRun did not have the in-house expertise to use the new technology – and so, asked for our support to integrate and start using it.
Calligo helped SunRun achieve clear data analysis practices, integrate new intelligence software, and migrate documents for five departments.
The company had clear objectives that included creating best practices in data analysis and implementing the new intelligence software throughout the business.
We supported SunRun to onboard up to five departments in the data programs as well as establish timelines, conduct in-depth scoping and migrate documents.
Throughout the project we demonstrated our knowledge and approach on what level of support each department would need over a three-month period to best support the migration and creation of dashboards.
Calligo did a great job of helping Sunrun understand the art of the possible. Calligo came into our business and really taught us best practices in terms of Tableau application and what good looks like.
Steve Maier, Senior Manager, Data Services at Sunrun
Calligo helped SunRun reduce legacy license costs and improve data governance through training and optimal integration of Tableau and Snowflake.
The fast timelines we achieved on migrating the documents helped reduce SunRun’s legacy licence costs. Our team conducted training of more than 25 of the company’s full-time professionals which improved their data governance and analytics capabilities, previously seen as a weak area.
We achieved optimal integration of the Tableau and Snowflake dashboard programs producing easy-to-navigate data, practical explanations and clear visualisations. The user-friendly interface of the dashboards enabled better understanding of the information and greater engagement with data analytics within the SunRun team.
Planning Center

San Diego’s Planning Center serves churches and ministries, providing evolved worship scheduling and other applications. Calligo was enlisted for security.
Based in San Diego, Planning Center is a church management software company serving churches and ministries across the US and Europe.
Since it was set up fifteen years ago, the platform has evolved from a worship scheduling tool for organising volunteers, facilities and service programs to now including multiple applications for membership, managing donations, event registrations and child check-in tools.
With more than 50,000 customers, Planning Center currently holds millions of special category records and any data breach could potentially devastate their business. In their quest for thorough, honest and practical engagement, Planning Center turned to Calligo.
Calligo examined Planning Center’s processes to see if they met GDPR requirements, identified non-conformance, and oversaw remedial work.
Calligo’s first step was to examine how Planning Center’s existing processes and technologies stood up to GDPR requirements. After an in-depth analysis, Calligo identified a series of quick wins as well as areas of non-conformance. With the report presented and next steps agreed, work quickly began to implement resolutions. Calligo supervised all the remedial work to ensure it was carried out correctly and efficiently.
Due to the extreme sensitivity of the data that Planning Center processes, the platform is required to appoint a Data Protection Officer (DPO) to monitor the organisation’s ongoing adherence. Calligo was duly appointed and continues to serve as Planning Center’s DPO. This outsourced service covers a broad spectrum of responsibilities including advising on data protection and information security matters pertaining to the GDPR, reviewing and advising on privacy policies, procedures and documentation and serving as the contact point for data protection authorities for all data protection issues.
Churches and ministries are the heart of what we do at Planning Center…As their data management providers, trust is our number one most valuable asset. By working with Calligo, we’ve greatly increased the trust our churches have with us and the trust their congregations have with them, empowering them to do their jobs even better. The impact of our work with Calligo has consequences that reach far beyond our business and our bottom line.
Daniel Murphy, Product Manager, Planning Center
Calligo’s engagement with Planning Center improved data security, privacy, and compliance culture, resulting in pre-planning privacy adherence, risk management, and ongoing data privacy.
The benefits of Calligo’s engagement are significant – data security and privacy have become part of the natural language of Planning Center and embedded within its culture. Whereas privacy used to be addressed towards the end of the project, it has been moved to the beginning and this pre-planning privacy adherence has proved far more effective. Any privacy weaknesses can now be identified and remedied right from the get-go.
As Planning Center has realised, Calligo’s capabilities stretch far beyond privacy and the value of their GDPR project has been multi-faceted. Calligo’s expertise in technology, infosecurity and information management means that, in addition to the compliance framework, Planning Center’s entire risk profile has been addressed. Looking at how data flowed through the organisation, Calligo worked with the wider team to design and deliver a robust foundation for Planning Center to minimise its risk to emerging and developing regulations without sacrificing time to market. In essence, achieving ongoing data privacy by design and default.

MSG, a healthcare provider in Guernsey, upgraded its operations with a new patient record system and cloud-based technology infrastructure. Calligo provided data security support.
Based in Guernsey in the Channel Islands, The Medical Specialist Group (MSG) provides high quality and affordable specialist health services.
The organisation was in the process of upgrading its operations and one of the major planned advancements was the roll-out of a new electronic patient record system. MSG recognised that cloud-based technology infrastructure would be essential for their future digital transformation.
As MSG approached this new phase, security was one of their chief concerns. In the health sector, patient data confidentiality is paramount and, in terms of GDPR, medical records are classed as a special category of data. There was a clear and urgent requirement to make sure MSG’s data security was as stringent as possible and MSG trusted us to partner with them on their journey.
Calligo provided a three-fold action plan to manage MSG’s IT infrastructure with enhanced security and outsourced data protection expertise.
With a thorough understanding of the health sector, we were able to step in immediately and set in motion a strategy to host and manage the IT infrastructure in the most appropriate way, given the sensitivity of the data MSG held.
The initial action plan was three-fold as we took ownership of the infrastructure, provided enhanced security, and managed the IT estate.
In addition to these cloud-managed services and separate to the technical side, MSG also looked to our expertise to make sure they were managing their policies and data appropriately. Our Data Protection Officer as a Service (DPOaaS) was deployed to provide outsourced expert support and advice, and to oversee processes relating to GDPR. This aspect is part of a long-term journey and is vital in helping MSG to understand their data on an ongoing basis.
Calligo identified our requirements and put together a package that met our needs. We were also impressed by the relationship; this is not just a commercial relationship – we wanted a strategic partner and a trusted advisor to work really closely with our team to give us resilience and security.
Jon Buckland, Chief Executive, The Medical Specialist Group
Calligo’s security measures, including a fully managed Security Operation Centre, protect MSG’s sensitive data, giving them confidence in their reputation.
From the outset, an improved security stance was key to the success of the project and MSG now benefits from a fully managed Security Operation Centre (SOC) with 24/7 threat hunting. This means that any potential exploitation can immediately be identified and acted upon. This enhanced security mitigates any risk and gives MSG full confidence that their excellent reputation will remain intact.
By continuing to take advantage of our outsourced DPOaaS, MSG can be sure that the sensitive data they are holding is being looked after in the best possible way, both now and in the future.
Resilience and security are critical for a healthcare provider and our facilitation of the new cloud-based technology infrastructure and data protection expertise has enabled MSG to greatly improve its healthcare provision and, ultimately, save lives.

Impero produces SaaS educational software globally, facing Azure cost challenges. Calligo optimised their costs and strategy, enabling growth.
Impero specialises in producing educational software for schools which they then re-sell globally to the education sector. The software is provided as SaaS (Software as a Service) and, in essence, it allows schools to manage their lessons.
With a wide customer footprint, Impero was going through a period of rapid global growth. They were using Azure to host their software, sourcing the licensing and support through a distributor. However, Impero was struggling with the costs and did not realize any noticeable benefits from their relationship with this third party.
Impero was looking for a partner who would provide more than just a re-sell of the licences and they brought Calligo on board to help them optimize their costs and guide them on the path to achieving their future strategic goals.
Calligo reviewed Impero’s infrastructure, optimised Azure cost management, and evaluated various business models for potential savings.
We conducted a thorough review of Impero’s infrastructure and based on these findings, they were able to help with their cost management within the Azure estate.
Impero’s existing arrangement with Azure was on a pay-as-you-go basis. Although this was the most flexible option, it was also the most complex in the long-term, so we looked at a variety of different business models to ascertain how significant savings could potentially be made.
20-30% cost savings achieved
Our technical engagement and expertise led to substantial financial gain for Impero. By optimising within the cloud environment, we were able to create a cost model that saved Impero 20-30% on Azure costs
Eviivo

Eviivo’s booking software struggled to cope with its rapid growth, leading to lost bookings and over-allocation of rooms. They sought Calligo’s expertise in cloud-based services to improve their infrastructure.
Eviivo is an award-winning booking software for B&Bs, hotels, apartments, and vacation rentals. This successful business is growing quickly and taking on new customers at a very fast pace.
While this rapid international expansion was extremely exciting for Eviivo, it was triggering all kinds of complex difficulties, largely due to the fact that the underpinning infrastructure was struggling to meet the needs of the growing business. Their environment was failing at critical moments and they were unable to achieve effective disaster recovery.
Eviivo’s services needed to be readily available 24/7 and these protracted outages were proving catastrophic. Increasingly, issues with the platform were causing lost or duplicate bookings and this, in turn, was leading to significant additional costs on account of relocation due to over-allocated rooms.
Aware of our extensive experience in delivering and maintaining high performing, secure and dependable cloud-based services across the globe, Eviivo sought their expertise.
Calligo reviewed Eviivo’s IT estate and recommended new technology infrastructure. We provided dedicated project managers, consultants, and resources for the transition, with 24/7 support available to minimise business impact.
Our team’s first step was to carry out a thorough service review of the existing IT estate and architecture, identifying all the performance issues. Based on these findings, the recommendation was that we would provide Eviivo with a new technology infrastructure.
Eviivo subsequently committed to transforming its entire IT infrastructure and adopting new ways of operating to support its long-term IT requirements.
A dedicated project manager and principal consultant were appointed to Eviivo for the duration of the project with additional Calligo resources utilised to deliver specific aspects and to complete different tasks as required.
There were several phases to the strategy and, throughout the project, our managed services and support teams were available 24/7 to deal with any issues or to perform planned activities outside of normal business hours. In this way, the business impact during the transition period remained minimal.
Calligo provided Eviivo with cloud-based data services to enhance their performance and ensure data protection. Effective disaster recovery is in place.
Our team succeeded in providing Eviivo with a portfolio of data services based on the most innovative cloud technologies that optimised every stage of the data journey while constantly ensuring adherence to relevant international and industry-specific data protection legislation.
Once the services were fully migrated to the Calligo Cloud, we continued to work with Eviivo to implement further changes, ensuring the team had the technical know-how to take advantage of all the new features and further enhancing the service Eviivo was able to deliver to its clients.
The solution has significantly enhanced the performance and availability of line of business applications and improved Eviivo’s overall stability and performance. Effective disaster recovery is in place and they now have an environment where they can recover from an outage within two hours.
In what continues to be a long-term partnership, Calligo has been able to meet and exceed the expectations of Eviivo and deliver a first-class service and industry-leading platform to support both its immediate and future strategic goals.

Definitions for Sales Plays changed throughout the year, making tracking effectiveness challenging. Microsoft needed a solution to streamline and enhance the Sales Plays process while providing consistent year-over-year tracking.
Calligo built models for various Sales Plays
In collaboration with Calligo, Microsoft implemented a dynamic solution using R Shiny. The tool empowered the Data Science team to build models for various Sales Plays, optimizing the process and enabling more informed decision-making. The solution included:
- Elastic net regression to identify predictive features for each target.
- Controls for reducing collinearity via lasso and ridge regressions.
- Boosted random forest model predicting service adoption or usage increase.
- Post-processing with cosine similarity to target accounts for growth or adoption.
- Visualization of model outputs in Power BI reports for easy seller access.
The difference working with Calligo was the team’s mindset. They looked at the problem entirely as a commercial question, not as a data science challenge applied in a business context. And it worked.
Bo Oslen, Microsoft
A transformative impact on Microsoft’s Sales Plays
The implementation of the solution had a transformative impact on Microsoft’s Sales Plays and data-driven decision-making:
- Efficiency Gains: Empowered the data science team to build dozens of models efficiently, a process that would have been manual and time-consuming.
